Stop and Link

Yeah, I'm linked to these girls, sure.

Well, it’s been a hairy week. The World Series came and went, Halloween came and went (not in that order), and I came and went to The Great White North. While there I had plenty of time to surf, and I consider this the best of the Web:

The game analysis in this Weekend Dime is a bit outdated, but the top cap space teams for 2010 is avant if anything. Also, money quote: “You hesitate to nitpick given how ruthless Boston has been to start the season, but it’s impossible not to notice that Sheed hoisted six 3-pointers in 24 minutes of the Celtics’ win Tuesday in Cleveland, then took eight shots — all 3s — in Wednesday’s home rout of Charlotte. Before that, Wallace launched 39 3-pointers in Boston’s seven preseason games.” Sheed has since made 10 three-pointers since Sunday, including six in Tuesday’s win over the Sixers.

Jonah Keri remembers Pedro Martinez’s forgotten perfect game. Pedro didn’t pitch too well or look too good in Wednesday’s deciding World Series contest — he was breathing heavily and his delivery was stiff from what I caught — but we all know how special he was at his peak. Manny Ramirez, the other outsized personality from that epic Red Sox nucleus, earned a New Yorker profile, but if you ask me, Pedro is the more compelling character.

The Knickstwitter account is depressing.

Apparently Red Sox hurler Hideki Okajima runs marathons in Hawaii in the offseason? Incredible. I hope the Sox keep him around, as I have his player tee and have no aspirations to buy another non-AHL tee, or any other sports-related clothing for that matter.

This guy blew the fuck up the other week, and it got some press. I looked into the guy and found an old article, over a year old, sure, but this is simply an astounding career path. Him and Dr. Jerry Punch need to get together for dinner and tape it.

Deadstock Whaler freaks.

In animal news, several items popped up in the past week or so that had us cringing and cooing. An ice skating circus bear in Kyrgyzstan got a little crazy and ent his boss’ life. NYMag wrote about Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber’s sequel to Phantom, including a tidbit about his naughty kitten, Otto, who “[leapt] onto the composer’s computerized piano and [erased] the entire score from its memory” in 2007. AHH you little rascal! Original report here. (Love Never Dies is set to open in London in February.) And Underwater New York launched and reminded us that a dead giraffe was once found at the bottom of the New York Harbor.

News from across the river: The real Jigga man-North Jersey connection. I’d say if Jay-Z wants to buy your house, then you’ve made it. Everyone in that neighborhood should congratulate themselves.

The best way to eat the best food on the planet.

What’s an emp? Well, it’s this.

What you know about these? There are good hats to be had here, if you’re still into hats, especially this Rocky George-style chapeau. And if you’re not into hats, and you’re not into Rocky George, what are you into?

And finally. An article in this week’s New Yorker discussed murder rates in America, and if they had to do with the type of leadership in the country. And The Book showed how MLB salaries were related to the GDP. What do both these things mean? Hard to say, but it’s reassuring to know some things are interrelated, whether these relationships exist or not.

Grillo’s Pickles – The indomitable Travis Grillo has been in good spirits, even for him, from his pickles selling out at all nine Boston-area Whole Foods. The young entrepreneur’s future continues to offer promise: Grillo’s has sponsored an indoor soccer team, is busy recruiting people to wear the pickle suit, and is preparing christmas jars. Spicy pickles, which up until this date have been of limited stock, are rumored to be on the cusp of a wide release. Check out his Twitter at twitter.com/GrillosPickles.

The Pegasus 7″ is now available for purchase from Six Feet Under Records, and has leaked online. The record sounds like two subway trains hitting each other, and a review worthy of the music itself will follow.
